Welcome to the
Scottish Collies of Woodpecker Farm
What is a Scottish Collie, anyway?
I can't remember a time when I didn't want a collie. I would sit in front of the television with my standard poodle, Pierre, as a child and watch Lassie every week. Pierre was lovely, but I wanted a collie. I cried each and every time that theme song played and Lassie sat there with her foot raised to say goodbye. I needed a collie.
Flash forward some 50 years when I stumbled upon the Scottish Collie Preservation Society on Facebook. Wonder of wonders...these people understood. They took the breed standard from a century ago and began collecting the remnants of old lines, the lighter coats that were intended for work on a farm, not a show ring. The dogs were born with eyes that were actually visible and not hidden by hair. They were breeding Lassie. The dog of my dreams, the dog that was once seen across America on every farm, including my grandparents' dairy, but had somehow disappeared until many people cannot even recognize it any longer. My heart lept with joy. These were my dogs.
Ivy Barr's Foxtrotter of Woodpecker Farm
Ivy is a lovely tri-colored collie registered with SCPS. She is coming two this summer. I plan to breed her later this year to another SCPS registered dog, a sable. There will be a litter announcement when this happens.
Ivy enjoys life on the farm and pushing the chickens back into their coop is her favorite activity. I have considered getting her started in herding, but we're so busy here with the horses that it just hasn't happened.
What Ivy has done, however, is hone in on her scent work. She participates in North American Sport Dog trials, primarily the rat scenting games. In fact, Ivy qualified to represent Rough Collies in the Breed Showcase at Nationals this year! We're very excited about this growing sport and hope to add antler shed to her games later this year.
If you are interested in a pup from Ivy, please fill out this form. There is no financial commitment until the breeding has taken place and pregancy confirmed.
Carabella's Sheppie Boy
My first collie, Shep came to us from the Carabella Kennel in Oregon. He was 14 months when he arrived, and had been returned to his breeder a few months prior to that due to personal troubles with his previous owner. He was insecure, cried continually in the car, and was nervous when we went out on walks. But with time, love, and positive reinforcement, Shep became the most wonderful companion!
Shep and I have hiked several hundred miles together, and that activity helped him bond with me and changed his entire outlook. He's now a confident, happy dog who happily returns the smiles of anyone who takes the time to smile at him.
Many thanks to Margarett for choosing me to be his person!
